Velka
(Great) Fatra mountain range, at the western edge of the Liptov region,
offers plenty of sights in a compact area, stretching south from
Ruzomberok to Horny Harmanec (near Banska Bystrica). Among the wildest
ranges in
Slovakia
, the chain sports a mixture of evergreen and deciduous forests, flowery
sub-alpine meadows and grassy uplands.Three mountain chalets offer
accommodation on the way: Chata SCP near Mala Smrekovica in the north,
Chata pod Borisovom in the centre and Horsky Hotel Kralova studna in the
south. Some of the best hiking trails around the Great Fatra start
in the idyllic
village
of
Blatnica
This is one of those wonderful old Slovak villages with
wooden cottage and a handsome mountain spring that runs right through the
centre. From here, you can head into one of two valleys that make dramatic
walks into the Fatras: Gaderska Dolina and Blatnicka Dolina. Both are
gentle hikes, lasting around six or seven hours, that include wonderful
mountain views as well as many impressive rock formations. The Blatnicka
Dolina hike takes you past a 13th century castle. Both hikes terminate at
the foot of the
Krizna
Peak
(
1547 metres
), where you'll find a fine chalet (cottage with rooms for rent).
There are several tourist and skiing centers in the range.
One of the best known Slovak ski centers Donovaly, is situated right at
the border with the Low Tatras mountains.
The highest mountain is Ostredok, 1,592.0 m.
Other important mountains of the largest Hôľna Fatra part are Krížna
,1,574.3 m, and Ploská, 1,532.1 m , where the main ridge
divides into two ridges, western Turiec Ridge with e.g. Borišov,
1,509.5 m , and eastern Liptov Ridge with e.g. Rakytov, 1,567.0 m.
